Why pop-up bike paths across Sydney has sparked heavy debate
A number of temporary bike paths set up in Sydney during COVID-19 are causing heavy debates between cyclist advocates and residents.
The bike paths come with a small speed-bump to deter traffic, and are set up across the city.
Bicycle New South Wales representative Peter McClean told Jim Wilson the pop up lanes are proven to be successful and well utilised.
“They’re linking bike paths to other bike paths, making it safer and much more efficient for cyclists,” he said.
Glebe resident Di Anstey, who lives where a pop-up bike path is set up, disagrees.
She told Jim that the pop up bike paths pose a safety risk and should be removed.
“The majority of residents don’t have any rear access to their properties, which is a big safety problem.”
