‘You’ve got to get the politicians off the playing field’, Liberal MP calls for rail unity
For decades, high-speed rail lines have been proposed but have never got over the line.
A high-speed train connecting Sydney to Newcastle and Nowra could now be on the cards, with a Liberal MP leading the charge.
Member for Bennelong John Alexander is leading a federal infrastructure and better cities parliamentary inquiry, saying the high-speed rail proposal stacks up.
“It really should happen and there’s converging forces now.
“Initially, it was always discounted because it didn’t stack up commercially.
“Where it does stack up commercially is when you look at creating cities through bringing them closer to Sydney.”
Mr Alexander’s says for long-term infrastructure projects to be successful, politicians from both sides need to get on the same song sheet.
“I think it’s very, very important that we stop political interference. As soon as you’ve got political interference, you cease this production of infrastructure.
“You’ve got to get the politicians off the playing field.”
